The fact that you are able to start Word using the /a switch which
loads Word using the defaults and bypasses your Normal.dot, personal
Registry settings, and add-ins, suggests you have a conflict with one
of the items listed.

Take a look at this article which contains the steps you need to take
to determine the exact cause:

Beth, I am having the same problem as Rick and went to the article you
suggested, tried all of the fixes and continued to have the same problem. I
don't know if it makes a difference, but I am using Microsoft Office 2000 and
all of the other components of this suite are working just fine. Additionally
my problem began when I upgraded from Nortonsystemworks 2004 to 2005

This could be caused by the Office Plug-in option found in Norton. I
know SystemWorks doesn't have this option but if a previous version of
NAV was installed, which contained the plug-in, and Norton SystemWorks
was installed later the DLL for the plug-in could still be registered.

First search for officeav.dll and if found go to Start/Run and run the
following command:

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"

In the above example the path for "Officeav.dll" would depend on the
location of the DLL.

Beth, thanks for your feedback. I am sure this must have appeared at one of
the other threads, however I seemed to have tripped over this method of
fixing my problem. I went to the start up group for MS office found a file
entitled. wfword2k.dot and deactivated it by changing the suffix to extension
to old. The file is a Symantec file dated 2001. In any case word started up
right away after making this adjustment. Just thought I would mention this
for any others having this problem.

I thought you said you tried all of the fixes in the troubleshooting
article. Checking for global template in the Office Startup folder is
included. In any event, I'm glad you found the solution. :)
