Word 2000 problem

Why does the whole paragraph highlight for type over when
I am only trying to highlight one word to type over? How
do I correct this setting?

Could it be that the entire paragraph is a field? What do you see if you set
field shading to "When selected" (View tab of Tools | Options)?
