Word 2000 problem

I installed Office 2000 Standard on a brand new XP
machine. When my user clicks open, and double clicks a
file, Word either crashes without an error message, or it
just closes the open dialog box and closes the opened
blank document. This leaves a grey background with the
Word toolbars and menu bars. Here's where it gets funky.
I can click the icon in the top left of the screen, and
get the dropdown containing Minimize, Maximize, Restore,
etc. But clicking any of the menu or tool bar options
does nothing. Clicking the X to close does nothing. Word
appears in the Taskbar, but when I CTRL + ALT + DEL and
open Task Manager, it is not shown on the list.

Any ideas?
