Word 2000 Registry information missing message

I have Win98SE and Office Professional 2000 SR-1. Last week I had a problem with ZoneAlarm which locked up my internet connection until I completely removed the program and also had to uninstall IE Explorer 6 (am back to 5.5). At the same time I started getting this message whenever I try to use any Office applications: "Required registry information is missing and this application cannot run. Please rerun setup to correct this problem." I have tried the suggestions in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (re-run setup, repair office, un and re-installed several times). I can't use the Windows Installer cleanup tool as my version of msi.dll is 2.0+. I've followed the instructions in this newsgroup regarding Norton Antivirus (disable the auto scan) and turned off certificates in IE. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks.

An update to this problem: I found an article in the Knowledgebase that explains how to remove the Office2000 installation completely. I did not realize that it left a lot of files behind after the uninstall. Once I followed the instructions in the article, I was able to reinstall without getting the error message.
