Word 2000 reverting to default settings

I'm running Word 2000 under Windows ME. With depressing frequency, Word
ignores all my carefully-altered settings for such features as Autoformat,
Autocomplete and the god-awful Office Assistant (my settings being basically
to turn everything off) and reverts to its defaults.

Why does it do this? How can I stop it happening?

It sounds as if your normal.dot template turns up missing from time to time. Try
creating a backup copy of the file, then, the next time you lose your settings,
close Word, restore normal.dot, and open Word again.
