Word 2000- rulers hiding

My vertical and horizontal rulers are hiding.
If I click on a vertical part of my table, the horizontal ruler appears as
long as I hold down the mouse button.
And if I click on a horizontal table line, the vertical ruler appears.
Any ideas what i've done??
