Word 2000 shuts down without warning

I have Word 2000 on a Dell XPS computer...and just today, when making changes
on an existing Word document, the document closes, without the changes being
saved. I can't make more than one or two changes, before it shuts down. I
can access it again...but it still shuts down. Any help on this?
