Word 2000 slow performance

i recently started experiencing very slow performance in
word 2000. The cursor changes to the hourglass about
every 20 seconds. It takes about 3 seconds to return to
the cursor. while it is in the hourglass I can't type
anything. I have turned off fast saves and have
backup documents only every 20 minutes. nothing seems to
help. Exel works fine. any suggestions?

Turn off the Office-Plugin in the options of your Antivirus software if you
are running one.
