Word 2000 Spell Check Problem

Whenever I run spell check, the windows always comes like normal but I
have to click on an Undo Edit button (where the Ignore butting normally
is) before the spell checker actually works. All of the suggestions,
the Ignore operations, and the Add operation are all grayed out. If I
click the button 'Undo Edit', the spell checker works normally after
that. Anyone have any suggestions?
