Word 2000 Spellchecker does not allow me to 'add' a word.

.... the 'add' box is simply grayed out. I have run 'detect and repair' to no
avail. Is there a really knowledgeable person out there who can help an old
lady? tks...

I haven't received a reply to this vexing problem yet, so I have tried all
sorts of other things. Boy, I sure could use some help. Running Word 2000
under xp Professional; and the 'add' button on the spell checker is always
grayed out, so that I cannot add new words to a custom dictionary that has
always worked in the past. It is checked in the dictionary section under
Tools. I have read the 'help' section several times, and even search for an
answer on the web. I 'repaired' Word from the original disk which
apparently reinstalled word, to no avail (thanks to a clue from Cindy/mvp
that I found on some other posts) -- but, it is still grayed out. So, I
must have misconfigured it or done something wrong. I also tried disabling
the custom dictionary, and tried it without any dictionary invoked. That
didn't do anything. I tried to add a dictionary; but don't know where to
get another dictionary. How does one add a new dictionary? Whew! Ideas
anyone? It would be a big help. Thank you. Winnie.

Custom Dictionary is usually language dependent. So if at some time you have
had an incorrect language setup, or even if you have had Do Not Check
Spelling or Grammar, then the Custom.dic is unavailable. Check that all your
language settings are correct (windows, keyboard, office,etc.). Then open
Custom.dic in Notepad (it is only a list of words in plain text) and make
sure that it isn't corrupt or too large. I cannot remember the max size for
custom.dic in Office 2000, but it should be in HELP. You can create another
Custom.dic too, but I cannot remember how it was done in 2000.
