Word 2000 Styles not in Word2007 Styles list

Lost my computer last week, but saved the hard drive (thank heavens for a $20
USB interface kit). Anyway, in the process, I have updated from Office
Products 2000 to Office Products 2007.
I have a Word 2000 document (lots of them) that when I load it into Word
2007, the Styles of some of my paragraphs (I guess a style I created in Word
2000) do not show up in the Word 2007 Styles list. The document looks OK,
but when I click inside a paragraph, there is not a Styles highlighted
(circled) in the Styles list.

I did discover via the Styles pane display (thanks Suzanne for helping
another guy with this question) that the Style did get carried through and
recognized (I guess) by Word 2007, so how do I or can I get this old Style
(body text indent) to show up in the Word 2007 Styles list -- and will it
work the way it should -- i.e. when I click in a paragraph with the Normal
Style, the Normal Style is highlighted (circled) in the Styles list -- so I
know the style of the paragraph I am in.

You can specify which styles are displayed in the Styles pane. By default,
Word displays "Recommended" styles, but if you click on the Options... link
at the bottom of the pane and choose "In use" instead, you should see your
custom style (but you may lose others that you haven't yet used but might
want to).

You can be even more selective by clicking on the Manage Styles button (it's
the third icon from the left at the bottom). On the Recommend tab of the
Style Manager, you can assign priorities to the style and make them visible
or not (or "Hide until used"). You can get a lot of very fine-grained
control this way--probably more than most users really want to bother with!

You can also right-click any style in the Styles pane and either add it to
or remove it from the Quick Styles gallery.

Thanks for the help -- that did it. Just a comment and one more question.

I used your 2nd option/suggestion (Show when viewing Recommended Styles) and
it gave me just what I wanted. Is there any way to get the selected Style to
appear in the three Styles of the Style Gallery that appear at the top of
Word instead of me having to stop and display the entire Style Gallery to see
what Style I have selected.

The question is, concerning the right click drop down menu when in a
paraqgraqph, one of the options is Styles->"Update 'Body Text Indent' to
match selection" (if I am in the Body Text Indent Style paragraph) -- exactly
what does that mean? Am I updating the Style or updating the paragraph or
what.

Actually that was two questions, wasn't it.

If I'm correctly interpreting what you're asking, I think you have to set
the priority of your preferred styles to be higher than that of the others
in the Quick Style gallery. Note, too, that the number of styles you see in
the Quick Styles gallery will depend on your screen resolution and window
width (I see six).

As for updating styles, if you make a change to a single paragraph in a
given style and want to update the style to include that change, you can use
Update Style to Match Selection. It's a quick way to modify a style ("by
example") instead of using Modify and making the change directly.

Suzanne,

Thanks for your help -- this was the information I needed -- and I even
understood your response. So I guess I will just bring up the Gallery Pane
if I am interested in identifying the Style of the paragraph I am in. And I
hope when I upgrade my monitor (from 17" to around a 23" or 24"), I will also
be able to see more of the Styles Gallery displayed.

What most of us "power users" do is add the classic "Style" dropdown to the
QAT. It always reflects the style at the insertion point. Find it in
Customize under Commands Not in the Ribbon or All Commands. It's the one
that shows a dropdown arrow, and when you mouse over it in the list, the
ScreenTip will say "StyleGalleryClassic"
