Word 2000 Template Error - "the memory could not be read"

We have a custom Word template that works fine in 2002 and 2003, however in
2000 it crashes Word with and error - "the memory could not be read"

Even if we delete everything from the template it still gives an error.
Updated Word 2000 to SP3 and still same issue.

We assume this is a corrupt template issue. Is there any way to correct
this? This is a very complex template with a number of macros, custom
styles, properties, fields, etc so not easy to redo from scratch. The
template did work in 2000 in an earlier version but it seems that recent
changes has now broken it.
