Word 2000 to Mac 5.1

Q

Quido

Does anyone know where I can download a plug-in so I can converter my
Word 2000 (PC)documents to Word 5.1 for Mac (.mcw)?

Sure-

If you still have access to Word 2000, open a file, go to Save As and in the
bottom list of File Types choose Word 5.1 (Mac).

If not, look into MacLink Plus Deluxe.

It's not that simple. Although the option is visible. It prompts you to
insert the original software disk. When you do that, it says this
option is not available. Is the office version of word less robust
than the stand alone version?

I thought there might be a simple plug-in I could download.

There is such a plug-in, although a certain amount of formatting gets
dropped in the process. Nonetheless, you get the text and some of the
formatting.

I have the plug-in; it is called

Word 97-98 Import

and it goes in the Word Commands folder of 5.1a. I have no idea where or
if you can still download this, but I got it years ago. It is about 450K
in size. It still works because the file format from Word 97/98 on up
has remained the same. For that reason, even though Word 2004/Mac lacks
a "Save As" function to save as Word 5.1a, you can open even a Word 2004
file in say Word 2001 and save down from there. Saving as .rtf is also
possible, of course, but creates additional interpretation problems when
you open the file in Word 5.

The best solution, as someone else suggested, is always to save down
from the higher version, rather than using an iffy import filter.

Shouldn't be, but I'm not an expert on Office 2000. Have you made sure
that all the relevant updates are applied?

If you really are using Word 2000, there is: You need the Supplementary
Converter Pack, which you can download from the Microsoft website for free.

If you have the original install disk for Word 2000, go to Add/Remove
programs and to an Update to Add the Supplementary Converters.

No: there is no difference between the version of Word 2000 in Office and
the stand-alone one, but there is a difference between that and the one that
comes with Works Suite: that one has no VBA, and may not support the Mac
Word 5.1 converter.
