Word 2000 will not open pst startup screen

Word 2000 opens the splash screen with the product name, my serial nimber and
my name but goes no further. Can open W2k by using run/winword.exe /a.
Renamed normal.dot and open from the run. W2k still hangs on the opening
screen. Noted that CPU usage goes to 100%. Program will close with error
report.
No add-ins. Any ideas on what is going on. No new programs installed,
except MSoft security updates. Have uninstalled and re-installed. Nada.
Please help.

The fact that the /a switch works means that you have a corrupted add-in or
normal.dot template. Run through the entire procedure at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm to isolate the
fault and remove it.

Thanks for the info. Tried all of the methods in that FAQ. Moved normal.dot
to all startup paths. Still no luck. Even brought a new normal .dot from a
working installation. Anything different to try?

Nowhere in that article does it say anything about moving normal.dot
*to* any startup path. It says to remove all templates *from* Startup,
or at least change their extensions so they aren't recognized as
templates. It also discusses removing or renaming normal.dot -- so
there is no normal.dot anywhere on the disk -- and restarting Word.
Did you do those steps?

It's also possible that the problem is caused by a COM add-in (one
that isn't a .dot file). Read
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx and
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CheckIfAddinsInstalled.htm
to find out how to locate any COM add-ins, and temporarily remove them
if there are any.
