Word 2000 will not start

I get the little box with version number and confirmation of my registration
key - plus the hour glass - but nothing more.
Normal.dot has been renamed normal.old - there is nothing in the word
startup folder.

What next?

Does Word start okay if you use the /a switch? If so, then the next step
would be to delete or rename the Data key, as described here:
