Word 2000 window will not resize

I have Office 2000 Professional running on XP Pro with dual monitors in use.
Today Word demonstrated new behavior. Opening a document will only open
maximized. Clicking the restore down icon causes the application to
minimize. There is no way to resize the window so it doesn't cover the
entire monitor screen.

What should I do to correct this?

Does restoring really minimize the window or just make it invisible?
Right-click on the document's Taskbar button and see what choices you have.
If they include Maximize and Minimize but not Restore, then your document is
open in a Normal window offscreen. Open any other window, then right-click
on an empty area of the Taskbar and choose Cascade or one of the Tile
options. This should bring your document back in view. Use the mouse to move
and size the window to your liking, then quit Word. When you restart Word,
the window should be as you left it.
