Word 2000 won't open despite reinstall

Second try on my Word 2000 woes: When I try to open word it tells me "this
application must be installed to run."
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. No luck. I have tried running a
Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Still nothing. I tried renaming the
normal.dot file. No luck there either.
Despite all this uninstalling, could some corrupt Word files still exist? Is
there a way to get ALL the Word files out so I can start over with a clean
slate?
The computer is a Dell Dimension 4300 running Windows XP. It came with Word
2000 as part of Microsoft Works (which works fine).
