Word 2000 won't open-error message

When opening Word 2000, I receive the following error
message "Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a
problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience." and a window to send the message to
Microsoft. Word will open using the /a switch. I'm
running under XP-Pro and I've tried uninstalling and re-
installing but can't repair the problem. Anyone with ideas
or similar problem? Help!

The fact that Word opens properly with the /a switch indicates that the
problem is in Normal.dot, the Registry, and/or an add-in. See
