Word 2000 won't open/Error message

When I try to open Word I get an error message it closes.
The technical information says:
C:\DOCUME~1\JACQUE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER5AC.tmp.dir00
\appcompat.txt
I have uninstalled and reinstalled at least a half dozen
times. I have run adware and virus scans in ad finitum,
but nothing works. I am getting desperate. Help.

I suppose it's a bad file, but search doesn't turn it up,
either.
