Word 2000 wont open/locks up computer

Windows 98 384 meg memory
A week ago I deleted a couple of word documents.
Now word wont open and the computer stops working.
I hit cont/alt/delete I get the message system dangerously
low on resouces and then it proceeds to ask me to shut
down keybrd/explorer and several others. Before this
happened word worked wonderfully. I have no problems with
any other programs exel / adobe photo work great. I have
tried to repair word using my disk, uninstall and reinstall
reinstalling windows 98. uninstalling word and several othe
programs ran Scan disk and defragment hard drive and
reinstalling word . Program still locks up on start up and
I have to turn off the computer manual. And then get the
message windows was not shut down properly.
Any help would be greatly appricated.
