Word 2000 won't open saved documents

Ican open Word 2000 from my desktop icon and start a new
document, but when I attempt to open any saved Word
documents in My Documents I receive the following message
and my computer hangs: "The system is low in resources!
Microsoft Word 9.0". Somebody PLEASE HELP, I am a detective
and I have a lot of important documents saved which are
VITAL to my business!
