Word 2000 won't start anymore

I can't get word 2000 to start by clicking on the desktop icons (the word and
documents). I've tried every fix that I've found online: renaming
normal.dot, deleting it (word did not recreate it so I had to make one by
saving a file as a template), deleting and reinstalling; deleting, cleaning
the registry, and reinstalling; starting in safe mode. The strange thing is
that I can open documents by clicking on their icon as long as word is
started (by entering winword.exe (with or without /a) at start-run). The
Word icon will open a new document also when I've done that. Please help me.

I suggest that you start by deleting the normal.dot you made. You cannot
make a normal.dot manually - well you can as you have done, but it won't
work like a real normal.dot. If Word will start when you type in winword.exe
in the Run dialog, there's not much wrong with Word. The first step I
suggest is that you do the same but use the /r switch to reregister Word in
Windows. From File, Run, type in

winword /r

and press enter. Nothing will seem to happen, but reregistration executes.
If that doesn't resolve the problem, have you looked at this FAQ:
