Word 2000 won't start

B

Budget Programmer

Hello,
When I attempt to start Word 2000, it just hangs. I have to close the task.

My new home PC had a trial version of Office 2003 as well as Works. To be
compatible with my work I loaded Office 2000. It worked fine for a few days.
Once I started accepting the automatic updates for Windows XP, Office 2003,
Symantec, etc. Word 2000 no longer worked.

I've done the following based (in part) on suggestions form Microsoft.com
forums:
Deleted Office 2000, rebooted and reinstalled Office 2000
Removed Office 2003
Removed Works
Deleted Normal.dot
Ran WINWORD /a (which runs successfully. It prompts me twice for
name/initials)
When I run Word without the "/a" switch, it does NOT create Normal.dot
Copied Normal.dot from my old PC. That doesn't work either. Continues to
hang.
Deleted everything in Windows/profiles/(username)/Temp
Ran Regedit and deleted HKEY_Current_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Data
Ran Regedit and deleted
HKEY_Current_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Options
I noticed some Office\11.0 entries there and deleted them. It seems that
uninstalling Office 2003 doesn't completely clear up the registry. I'm not
sure if I got everything though.
Deleted and reinstalled Office 2000 (again)
From Add/Remove programs I tried the Repair option
From Add/Remove programs I tried the "Run from my computer" setting in the
Office Maintenance wizzard
Applied 1a and SP3 to Office 2003

I'm not sure what else to do. I've installed Office 2000 on other PC's
running XP with no problems. The only difference I can see here is the trial
version of Office 2003 (which I removed, but I'm not sure if it's gone
completely)

Please help.

Help about 100 steps ago may have resolved this quickly: but heavens knows
what damage you may have managed to do to your registry and windows
structure doing all that. Deleting (groan) and reinstalling Office 2000 (or
any version of Office) will achieve nothing.

Start Word using the /a switch successfully means that you have a third
party template, add-in, macro or some other crap that is stopping Word from
running. The /a switch starts Word in its default install condition,
bypassing all customisations and/or add-ins. Normal.dot isn't created
because it isn't needed for this. Office 2003 will not create a normal.dot
until such time that a change is made that needs to be saved to the
normal.dot. So find the normal.dot you copied across and rename it as
normal.bad. If it is Works Suite that you installed, go to Add/Remove
programs and uninstall the Works Suite Add-in.

You now need to look at any customisations such as templates, macros, COM
add-ins, etc., that have been installed by third party software.

See the following document for more details:

Hello,
Thanks for replying. The deleteing and reinstalling office was recommended
by the Microsoft.com support site. Anything I did, was the suggestion of the
Microsoft support site. Those other measures were taken only AFTER I renamed
Normal.dot as you suggested below. There is only one version of "Normal.dot"
on the system. The software simply does not create it after it's renamed (I
renamed it to Normal.DDD).
The system came pre-loaded with Office 2003 Trial version and Microsoft
Works.
When I originally loaded Office 2000 it worked fine. I noticed the Word
problem after I started enabling updates to Norton Anti-Virus, Windows, etc.
and installed Peachtree.
After reading the document in your link, I have a feeling that the
Norton/Office plug-in may have something to do with the problem. I won't
know until I get to the PC sometime over the next few days.
I have to emphasize that renaming Normal.dot was about the first thing I
tried. The system simply refuses to create a new one. Using the command
prompt I go to the root of C and type "dir normal.dot /s". It only found the
one instance. It was renamed, and Word just won't create a new one.
Thanks for your help.

A I said, unlike previous versions of Word, normal.dot is not installed or
needed in Word2003 until you make a change that necessitates normal.dot to
save the change. Something as simple as Format, Font, change a font or font
parameter and then press the DEFAULT button at the bottom of the dialog will
trigger the need. When you close Word (and Outlook, if it is open), you
should receive a prompt to save changes to the global template (normal.dot)
and answering YES will cause a normal.dot to be created in your Username,
Applications Data, Microsoft, Template folder. (Note, under Tools, Options,
Save tab, the Prompt to Save to Normal.dot option needs to be checked and it
normally is checked by default.)

If you have NAV, it sure can be the root cause of your problems. I am quite
shocked that the MS Support did not pick up on the Office Plug-in in NAV
Preferences right from the start.

Terry,
Thanks again for replying. However, I am NOT using Office 2003. That has
been deleted. I want to use, and always wanted to use, Office 2000 (Word
2000).
Thanks.

Deleting will not have removed it all.

Terry,
Then, after having performed the "add/remove programs" from control panel,
what else do I have to do to removed Office 2003? Any links on this?

T

Add/Remove programs isn't deleting it: that's uninstalling it. Completely
different.
