Word 2000:Word Cannot complete the save due to a file permission e

I have seen a couple of posts related to this, but I too am getting this same
error.

I have Word 2000 SP3 .dot file that I created on my work laptop, which is
running WinXP Professional. I make changes to it and it saves just fine.
Then I take the file home to my home PC, which is running Word 2000 SP3 on
WinXP Home, and if I make any changes to the .dot file and save it, I get
that error.

Then my .dot file gets it property set to "Hidden" and it gets renamed to
"~WRL0002.tmp" and then a new "Hidden" 1KB file gets created with the same
name as my .dot file, with the exception of the 1st 2 letters being replaced
with "~$"

Anybody know why this is happening only on a WinXP Home PC? I have seen
some posts on the Internet related to this error, possibly leading this to be
caused by Norton Anti Virus products, which I do have installed on both PC's
(WinXP Home and Professional). This could possibly be the culprit, because
this has never happened in the past, prior to installing Norton's 2007
products. But I can't be sure, because it works on WinXP Professional just
fine. I have always made changes on my work PC and then taken the files home
and made changes there too, without any problems.

I turned off Norton Anti Virus and Norton Internet Security (Firewall) and
the problem still happens.

Re-enable NAV and then DESELECT the Office Plug-in option. Turning off NAV
doesn't stop the Office Plug-in (don't ask me why, ask Symantec).

Already tried that with the help of Symantec's technical support, and it did
not solve the problem.

Any other ideas? This is very annoying as I don't understand what the
difference is between XP Home and XP Professional. Works fine under XP
Professional with the same Norton products installed.

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:

I received the error:

DllUnregisterServer in C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton
AntiVirus\OfficeAV.dll failed. Return code was: 0x8002801c

Client system, XP Home, latest service packs, Word 2000, same issue.
This is nasty as the original file is in essence nuked for most users as the original file name is changed and they cannot find same.
Work around is to "Save as" and change the file name.
Removed Norton using the Symantec Removal Tool.

Download the tool for your version of Windows and run.
Problem goes away.
Installed Panda (Platinum 2006)
Problem did not return.

NOTE: I have Norton AntiVirus 2007 on both PC's, but the problem only occurs
on my home PC with WinXP Home.

Another observation...this problem does not seem to happen on my home PC
when the .dot file is under 1MB. The files I am seeing this happen with are
over 3MB in size.

Do you think this is related to the size of the file?

Yes, this is definately related to Symantec AppCore Service that runs. I had
formatted my hard drive and installed only WinXP Home, Office 2000 and Norton
Internet Security 2007 (NIS 2007). And as soon as I installed NIS 2007, the
error happened. I had modified my msconfig file, to selectively load various
Services on startup, and as soon as I added the Symantec AppCore Service,
this error occured. I am in contact with Symantec as we speak, and as soon
as I get a fix, I will note it here.

BTW...there is a newly released version of NIS 2007, that is available; NIS
2007.3

However, that version did not solve this problem.

Beth, that is not the problem. I have tried that and it does not solve the
problem. It is definately related to the "Symantec AppCore Service". If I
uncheck this Service in my "msconfig", I do not get the error. This also is
related to their Norton SystemWorks 2007 Premier product as well.
