Word 2000

In the last week or so, everytime I try to open a Word file from the internet
or email that browser will freeze and I have to ctrl+alt+del the program.
Also, I had to take off the Microsoft Word editing/etc on my Outlook because
otherwise my mail would freeze and crash. Any ideas what is going on or what
to do??

Also, if something does open in Word, it now has dots and the paragraph
symbol everywhere throughout the text....
