Word 2000

I have been using Word 2000 in the Office 2000 package for
the past three years. In the last couple days, Whenever I
open it, I immediately received a message (Program has
performed an illegal operation. Details shows
that "Winword has caused a general protection fault in
module USER,EXE)

I do not know how to repair this problem to make the
software usable again. I have tried what I know to no
avail. Are there any suggestions.
