Word 2001 automatically changes & deletes file

K

Kenny

Hi,
This is a serious problem we've just started encountering. When
working in Word 2001 on one of our networked computers, working files
mysteriously change names to "Word Working File_[different things]"
and delete the current file we're working on. This happens as we're
working on a file, or sometimes when it's just open in the program.

We're working off of a FireWire HD connected to a different machine,
but this hasn't posed a problem for any of our other programs.

It looks like when we save the document to our local HD, this problem
goes away. What might be causing this disturbing behaviour??

Thanks!

Hi Kenny:

This is a folder access permissions error.

When Word saves a file, it first writes it to the work file, then renames
the existing file, then renames the work file, then deletes the old file.
This is not only much faster (you do not have to write to disk twice) but
safer (you never run the risk that a software error will impact the
original).

However, it requires the authenticated user to have read, write, execute and
purge permissions to both the folder the document is in and the system or
file server's temp folder.

Cheers
