How can I assign a keyboard shortcut to the "Preferences"
item on the EDIT menu?

Tools/Customize... Click the Keyboard Button. Select All Commands from
the Categories listbox. Choose ToolsOptions from the Commands listbox
and enter your keyboard shortcut (click Add).

Just FYI, the "logic" behind that is that the MacWord Prefs dialog is
equivalent to the Tools | Options dialog in WinWord (a handy piece of
knowledge if you are ever forced to use WinWord for some reason). But how
extremely annoying!

Much less annoying than if the MacWord command were different than the
WinWord command, though, right? <g>

And while I nearly always assert the primacy of MacOffice apps, since
they appeared before their Windows counterparts, in this case I can't.
While WinWord's Tools/Options has stayed stable for a long time,
MacWord's Preferences command has bounced all over the menubar from
Word5 to Word04.

For cross-platform developers like you, yes. But it's *very*
user-un-friendly. I would think that putting in a redundant command, so
that EditPreferences and ToolsOptions pull up the same dialog, would have
been a better way to go. But changing the wording in that dialog must be a
more difficult coding task than I can imagine, since they haven't done it
yet, and it would be a simple way to make 90% of the market more satisfied
with Office.

True, true....

Well, that's what I was saying - in Word98 the command would logically
have been ToolsPreferences. In Word01 it would logically have been
EditPreferences, while in Word v.X and Word04, it would make sense to
make it WordPreferences.

Of course they *could* have called the command "Preferences"...

You might notice that Entourage 2004 has done just that. "Accounts" has
always been in the Tools menu ever since Entourage 2001 (first version). But
in 2004 there's now also a redundant "Account Settings..." menu item in the
Entourage menu, just below "Preferences..." which goes to exactly the same
place.
