Word 2001/vanishing menus

Can some kind soul please remind me of the fix for the 'vanishing sub-menu's
problem' in Word 2001?

It was posted here a long time ago and I've forgotten the fix.

Sub-menu's suddenly don't work and Word (within Office 2001) crashes often.

Mac OS9.1. Plenty of RAM. Memory on Word set to 40,000K.

If you know something's been posted before, search the archives using

(bookmark it in your browser). A search for "sub-menus" brings up a ton
of hits.
