Word 2002 and Address Book

My Gateway 700X came with "Works Suite 2002," which includes Word
2002. I'm learning to use Word, but have been unable to find a way to
develop an address book that I can use with it.

When I click my way to "Tools|Letters and Mailings|Envelopes and
Labels," and then click on the address book icon, I get stopped at an
error message that says something like "unable to log on to to
Microsoft Exchange.' Is logging on to "Microsoft Exchange" the only
way I can develop an address book to use with Word? Could someone
explain what Microsoft Exchange is? Is it a program that I should
have somewhere in the collection of Works CD's that came with my
computer?

I do have an address book that I use with Outlook Express -- though it
doesn't display mailing addresses. Can that address book be made to
display mailing addresses and then be made accessible to Word 2002's
Envelope and Label function?

Would very much appreciate some guidance
