Word 2002, Backspace and overwrite don't work

Something has happened to my Microsoft Word and I don't know how to change
it. When I highlight a block of text and press the backspace button, it does
not delete the text. Instead, the cursor just moves to the start of the
higlighted text. The same happens when I highlight text and then try to
replace it by typing. Word just moves the cursor to the front of the
higlighted text, deselects that text and carried on writing as normal.

How can I restore the settings I had before? It's really annoying.

Tools | Options | Edit, make sure "typing replaces selection" is checked.
Backspace counts as typing.

general Word groups by starting here.
