Word 2002 Crashes Upon Start-up

I just installed Office XP Pro (2002 version) on a Gateway
350 MHz Pentium II computer with 192 MB of RAM running
Windows 98.
Word consistently crashes within 5 sec. of loading. (The
other apps are fine.) The Error Signature indicates an
exception in module gdi32.dll. I've tried all the things
listed in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm
with the support of a Microsoft technician, none of which
helped. The technician suggested updating my video driver
which I did. That didn't help either. The problem still
occurs when Word is loaded in safe mode but it does not if
the computer is started in safe mode. Does anyone have any
ideas? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. One
Gateway technician suggested I might need a new video
card, not just an updated driver. Does that make any
sense?

It is an absolute sure sign that you have a graphics problem. In Windows
Safe Mode, you are using the default Windows VGA driver - which is a very
basic display sufficient for fault finding problems. It maybe the driver is
corrupt and not being corrected when you reinstall the newer driver or it
may be a graphics hardware fault. Word is dammed hard on both graphics and
printer drivers and unless you play graphics-intensive games, Word will be
the first app to catch out a dodgy graphics card or driver.
