Word 2002 doc file size increases hugely after inserting <400kb pi

I am trying to insert a photo into a .doc. The .doc is originally ~90 KB of
text. The photo is a ~400 KB .jpg . After I insert the photo into the .doc
and save it, the file is now ~13 MB in size! If I insert another ~400 KB
..jpg, the .doc is now saved at ~26 MB! I am using XP Pro and Word 2002. My
coworker uses Win2k with Word 2002 and he does not have this problem. Is
there an option or setting somewhere that I need to change or what?aaaaaa
