Word 2002 documents - cannot unlock

Hi All

Am at the end of my tether. Was happily using Word 2002 today when all of a
sudden all my buttons greyed out and wheneve I try to edit any document I get
the 'this document is locked for editing' etc etc.

Have searched this forum and tried all options with no success (cleaned
up.tmp files, launched Word in Safe mode, tried Activate Product - when doing
this absolutely nothing happens, no pop-ups, nothing!)

Does anyone have any suggestions - have had the laptopand Works Suite 2004
for around 18m onths so I don't believe I have a trial version.....

Any advice most welcome as it's beginning to annoy me now!

Thanks

Simon

There is no trial version of Word 2002, and if you got it as part of Works
Suite, this would not be an issue, anyway. It does sound possibly like an
activation issue, but I would think that in 18 months you would have used it
more than 50 times. So you might see these articles:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/LockedFiles.htm
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/DocInUse.htm

You might also look at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm; at least see what
happens if you start Word in Office Safe Mode.

Hi Suzanne

Thanks for these but unfortunately I have tried all these to no avail. I
have also tried launching Word in Safe mode and still no joy - it launches
fine but still does not allow me to edit any files.

Do you have any further ideas? The only thing I can think of is the fact
that selecting 'Activate Product' doesn't give me any pop-ups. Is there any
way I can activate the product by getting some kind of file from Microsoft
directly as I have always had problems with programs trying to connect to the
web to update etc.

Thanks

Simon

If you can't activate via the Web, you should at least be getting a phone
number to activate by phone. The actual phone number varies by region, so it
isn't given in a KB article, unfortunately, but see the article "How to
activate an end-user subscription license in Office XP" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=293191 for as much info as is available.
This is a pretty detailed article, so perhaps it will offer something
useful.
