Word 2002 Equation Editor 3.0 separating letters in text

Using the eqn editor to build an fraction style of eqn with a numerator (top)
and denominator (bottom).

Using text to show definitions used in the eqn. When I type the word
"liabilities" the text enters ok in the editor, but when I leave the editor
to see the result, the "s" in that word separates from the main part of the
word and blank spaces have been inserted in between (ie liabitie s).

When I re-enter the eqn editor the liabilities word looks ok again.

I wonder how can I fix this?

Is there an alternative method for showing fraction type, text equations
using word?

Regards Tony

You can also try this method - for the word that is being separated,
highlight it, and select "Style" and "Text" (or from MathType, you can also
use Ctrl-Shift-E) -- this turns that word only into text format and the
equation editor won't try to separate the letters because it thinks it
recognizes it as a Math function.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Suzanne - That was a terrific reply. I have tried your very useful
article. I was acutually trying to type the acid test "quick ratio" formula.
My assignment is on financial ratios. I was using the style/text option to
prevent the style/math eqn part interferring and changing things by chance.

I want to put "Quick ratio = " infront of the field bracket part { } how do
I do that?

When I finish with inputing text into the field brakcets, how do I close
that function to send the finished result to the document insertion point. -
I tried Shift+F9 as per the paragraph above in article and just got "Error"
in a grey field with text disappearing?

Thanks Donna - I was using the style/text option in case the style/maths
option was treating as an eqn and mucking it up. Must be something about word
"liabilities" that word thinks is strange?

You just type the "Quick ratio =" as ordinary text (and you would probably
center the entire paragraph as a "display equation"). If you get an error
message for the field, then you've done something wrong, but from here I
can't say what.
