Word 2002 formatting

Changing the formatting on one small selected phrase changes the whole document. Undo (ctrl+Z) will undo the document formatting and leave the selected text formatted correctly but I should not have to do the second step. Can anyone tell me how to correct this?

This is not the setting that causes the problem. It's the "Automatically
update" setting in Format | Style.
