Word 2002 hangs when opening works files from floppy

Thursday morn

When opening a wps file from floppy word hangs for about 3 minutes.
This occurs with and without the antivirus plug-in enabled.
The hang does not occur when the file is copied to the C: drive.

The file is displayed
the insertion point does not blink
clicking with mouse results in hour glass
sometimes (not responding) is displayed in title bar
If left alone it starts working in about 3 minutes

Sometimes an error report is generated:
Exception information
code: 0x00000ec8

When attempting to load a file that was saved in word format to the floppy,
word opens but the document does not.

Any thoughts?

Do not *ever* try to open a document from a floppy in Word. This is the
quickest way to get a corrupt document. Instead, copy the file to the hard
drive; then open it from there.
