word 2002 hangs

I have MS Works Suite 2003 with Word 2002. When I launch Word, the
application hangs. The error message is: Hanging application WINWORD.EXE,
version 10.0.4524.0
hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0
hang address 0x00000000.

After sending report to Microsoft, I get a message that there is an upgrade
that will cure this problem. I follow the link, then Microsoft cannot check
my system because of missing patch files (.MSP).

I tried to use the repair button in the Control Panel. Then I tried to
uninstall Word with the intent of re-installing Word. Both methods were
unsuccessful because of the missing patch files. I tried researching
Microsoft self-help and I can't understand half of what I'm looking at.

Can anyone help this poor old dummy? In plain language? I would be ever so
grateful.
