word 2002 hangs

when i launch word 2002, it takes forever to activate and
be ready to respond to events. what's more it seems to
take up all of the cpu clock time. this is frustrating
since i'm developing a rather sophisiticated mail merge
involving tens of thousands addresses and i spend 1/2 my
time waiting for word to WAKE UP!

i recently installed Office XP/Pro over an existing
installation of Office 2000.

any ideas?

You could have a bad (incompatible or corrupted) template file. Try
searching for your Normal.dot template and rename it to something like
Normal.~ot.
