Word 2002, Hidden docs.

When I'm using Word 2002 in Office XP, and when I am
working in a document Word automatically creates MULTIPLE
hidden files ( about 25-30 for every document) Ive called
Tech support, searched for all viruses including SoBig
used spybot and gotten rid of anything contaminating my
computer.Also somehow the font is being changed during
transmission from my computer to someone elses by(
pcanywhere , sometimes this happens in the whole doc
othertimes half, or the middle.

I'm stuck, this has been going on for 4-5 weeks I've also
uninstalled Word 3 times, bought an upgrade, and updated
Windows software. But this has been going on before and
after the upgrade etc.

Does anyone have a suggestion or solution??? I'm
constantly using this for 8 hours a day at least since I
work from home and it's creating quite a few problems to
say the least.

Hi Amanda,

MS Word uses a number of temporary files, it's the
way it works. Here's an article that may help explain
what you're seeing:

If the reader's computer does not have the font you're
using installed on their computer then Windows will
tell Word what to use as a substitute. When that happens
the change will be listed in Word (with the document open)
in Tools=>Options=>Compatability=>[Font Substitution],
as one possibility.

If the font is embeddable you may want to turn on that
option in Tools=>Options=>Save, but your Word documents
may grow quite a bit.

Although it is not documented anywhere (even in the KB article Bob referred
you to), Word does create a temp file in the document folder every time you
save. These are ordinarily deleted when you close the document (if they're
not, then that's another question), so it's not a bad idea to save and close
the document from time to time just to get rid of them. Interestingly, each
one of them is a complete previous version of the document (two saves back
if you've already got Word saving backup files). You won't see these unless
you have All Files displayed (since they're not visible in All Word
Documents view), and that's probably just as well!

Hmmm, what are the formats of the file names
you're seeing?

I don't have any size for size multiple versions
of temp files being created by Word in any
of the four versions I'm currently running when
doing either interim saves or a save/close.

This may happen only with documents that contain OLE objects, since I
tried it on an ordinary text document and couldn't reproduce it. But if I
open a document containing charts and save it twice, the first time I save I
just replace the .wbk file. The second time, the present .wbk file is
written to a file called ~WRL3605.tmp. It has the date of the document
before I opened it. Saving again, I get ~WRL0519.tmp with today's date. Each
time I save, I get another one of these. The .wbk file is always the
next-most-recent version, and each additional ~WRL####.tmp file is a
complete (openable, editable) snapshot of a previous save.

All these files are closed (deleted) when I close the document. But some
users report that they are *not* closed, and I believe maybe this turned out
to be associated with the SMB packet signing issue? I remember that someone
did come up with a solution.

Hi Suzanne,

Hmmm, the ~WRL files should be clipboard objects, but
in Word 2002 graphics copied to the Office clipboard
are stored as graphics in an msohtml subfolder of
the Windows Temp folder (%TEMP%)
(another way to extract graphics from a word file
without using WebPage preview <g>)

~WRF should be a temporary Word document that can
sometimes be opened.

I tried to duplicate this by starting a new document
and using Insert=>Object and adding a 'Microsoft
Office Excel Chart' object, typing some text, saving,
typing again, saving (with the always create backup
setting on) but didn't see the files in either the
temp folder or the folder I created to save the
document in.

Can you reproduce this on a new document?

Are you using any addins with Word?

I do have some add-ins, but I doubt that they're relevant since I can recall
seeing this behavior long before I had them.

And yes, it is 100% reproducible. Steps to reproduce:

1. Create a new document based on Normal.dot

2. Insert a chart object.

3. Save the document as Temp.doc.

4. Press Enter. Save.

5. Press Backspace. Save.

6. File Open (set to display All Files) shows Temp.doc, ~$Temp.doc, Backup
of Temp.wbk, and ~WRL3268.tmp. The last is a file that did *not* previously
exist (in fact, there was another similar one created when I first ran the
test, basing the new doc on a custom template and then deciding I'd better
test with Normal.dot instead).

Moreover, today I'm seeing it with an ordinary text document:

1. Create a new document based on Normal.dot

2. Type "lore" and press Enter to insert a block of lorem ipsum text.

3. Save as Temp.doc.

4. Select and delete a paragraph of the text. Save.

5. Type in some new text. Save.

File Open shows a new file, ~WRL0290.tmp.
