Word 2002 open mult docs error

P

pk

Hello. One of my users with a new Dell and Word 2002 gets the following
error when he tries to open more than one document at a time by ctrl-right
clicking to select them in the "open file" dialog box.

"The command you selected is not available from this shortcut menu."

Word then locks up until he forces it to quit.

I've seen others post about this, but I've not seen any solutions...

WindowsXP/Office XP all updates and patches as of 1/17/04.

Thanks!

Hi PK,

Thank you for posting here.

According to my research, this error may occur when the operation method to
open multi Word documents is incorrect. I would suggest the user try either
of the following methods:

1. In Open dialog, use Ctrl + Left Click to select multi documents first,
and then click Open.

2. In Windows Explorer, select multi documents, and then press Enter to
open them in Word.

Based on my test, use Ctrl + Right Click cannot open multi Word files in
one time. So please let the user try above methods to see how it works.

Thanks JH. I mis-typed my post. The gentleman in question is using
ctrl-LEFT-click to select multiple documents in the Open File dialog box.
Once he clicks Open, Word crashes.

This only occurs on his computer (1 of 30). I've seen other posts about it
(google groups) but no resolutions.

He won't use Windows Explorer...claims it's "ineffecient."

Hi PK,

Thank you for your reply and clarification.

Let's perform the following steps to further troubleshoot this issue:

1. Did this issue occur for some specific folder/documents or for all
folders/documents?

2. Did the issue relate to the multi documents' volume? If the customer
only opens 2 files in the same time, does it occur?

3. Test the issue in Safe Mode, what's the result?

4. Disable the Norton Office plug-in program if you have Norton AntiVirus
or Norton Systemworks installed:

a. Start Norton AntiVirus. To do this, click "Start," point to "All
Programs," point to "Norton AntiVirus", and then click "Norton AntiVirus
2002". Note If you installed Norton AntiVirus as part of the Norton
SystemWorks 2002 program, click "Start", point to "All Programs", point to
"Norton SystemWorks", point to "Norton AntiVirus", and then click "Norton
AntiVirus 2002".
b. Click "Options" (in Norton SystemWorks 2002, click "Options", and then
click "Norton AntiVirus").
c. Under "Other", click "Miscellaneous".
d. Under "How to keep Microsoft Office documents protected", click to clear
the "Enable Office Plug-in" check box, and then click "OK".
e. Restart the computer.

I look forward to your progress.
