Word 2002 Open slowly

I am having the same issues everyone else is having but I
want to point out what success I have had and what we use
in house.

We have xp OS all udpated office xp al updated. P$ 24.
GHZ 512 ram blah blah blah. We have been struggling with
this partucualr issue since we went to the xp OS about
four months ago and has progressively gotten worse.

We use an indexing system named Worldox and we save and
open using such system. It utilizes hook files to know
when to bring up the indexer. we only have the hang up
issues if we are logged onto our user profiles for longer
than 4 hours. The issue also occurs if I go straight to
the mapped drive in my computer and go find the file
manually. If I open it I have to wait 15 seconds then
white screen for another 15-20 seconds then the curser
sits at the top not blinking and if I click to move the
curser somewhere the cursor turns to an hourglass and
after about 30 seconds. I get control of my document.
This occurs in both manners Too long to load.

BUT, If we log out of our user profile, not restart, and
log back in my word works like nothing was ever wrong.
but that is short lived by the end of the day or by the
next morning word is hanging and non responsive.

I have HP computers trying to figure out the problems,
now let's if our MCP's (Microsoft Certified
Professionals) can figure it out.

Mapped drives? Word HATES mapped drives. Go into Tools, Options, File
Locations and make sure that all network paths are set using UNC paths and
not using mapped drive letters.

Also, what server OS and servicepack are you using?

Well Microsoft did make an Application does that does work. There is
something else at work here. Two further questions please: what Anti Virus
are you using and what service pack level are you using on the Windows 2000
Server?

What comes to mind is possibly a problem with the profiles you are using. If
you log in as Administrator at one of the workstations and work as normal,
does the problem occur?

Unfortunately, I have no experience with Worldox: is it possible to set up
one of the workstations to not use the utility to see if it is an
incompatibility problem?

Terry

word file locations are all UNC and I have run the
support template from article 319299 and none of those
fixes worked.

I can cure my problems for a couple of hours by logging
out and logging back in.

We are using server 2000 with the latest updates.

I left on all my machines last night and first thing
checked my word issue on all of them and guess what they
all did the same thing.

Why would microsoft make something that wouldn't work
with there own technology?

no virus software and I beleive SP4 on the server.

we have a computer that does not use worldox and that
machine has the same problem. second the problem does
occur in the Administrator profile.
Also, I did another test and if I open a document that
resides on my local computer it loads right away but if I
load it from the server it replicates the issue.

thanks

There is something really bizarre going on here but I just cannot guess what
it is. Have you checked the Logs on the server to see if there are any clues
there?

If you have no AV running, are you sure you don't have a virus?
