Word 2002- quotation & apostrophe marks on top of letters

Hi- for some reason my dissertation (which was fine before) is now appearing
and printing the quotation and apostrophe marks slightly on top of the
letters. It's not giving them a full space, but crushing the words slightly
together such that the letters in the words with quote or apostrophe marks
are closer together too. When I turn off the Autoformat "straight quotes
with smart quotes" option this problem doesn't happen with the straight
quotes, but when I return to smart quotes it happens again (and I want to use
the smart quotes). My keyboard is set to english and I don't know what else
to do... PLEASE HELP!
