Word 2002 running under XP: can't print labels

Colleen

When I use the Tools>Letters and Mailings>Envelopes and Labels>Labels tab my
computer sends an error message to Microsoft and tries to retrieve my file,
essentially crashing Word.

This happens both with full page of same label, and with single label.

It happens when I print to the printer, and when I print to "New Document".

Envelopes print just fine from the Envelope tab.

I can't possibly be the first person to discover this, but I cant find
anything in the archives.

I have downloaded all upgrades and updates from HP for my printer. The fact
that envelopes print, but not labels has me baffled.

Also, I dont understand why it won't print to disk from the labels tab.

Hi Colleen,

Have you tried:
1. deleting Normal.dot?
2. Help | Detect and Repair...
3. reinstalling Word?

Success,
Cooz

My guess is that the Word data key is corrupt in the registry - You can
reset this key either by deleting or renaming it, or by using the tools in
support.dot.
See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=820919
See also http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm then

I downloaded the Word Support template, and tried to follow the instructions
in document 820919 for deleting the Word Data registry key. I got as far as
Step 3: "In the Support Template, click Troubleshoot utility"

When I click this button, I do not get a dialog box, nor do I see any place
to Select an Item, or Delete.

What I do get is a document called [ThisDocument (Code)}
that contains the following text

Private Sub Tshoot_Click()

I cannot seem to get anything that will execute and then give me a window
with an OK button to delete the registry.

What do I do next?

End Sub

Ok, macros are disabled. How do I enable them so they will run?

changed security level, ran macros, restarted computer, tried to do a page
of identical labels.

Windows crashed.

Next idea?

Let's step back a bit. It was the registry data key that I suspected was the
problem.

From the troubleshooting tool of the support template, there is a window
that says 'Introduction'. If you click the little arrow next to that item,
the next in the list is Data Registry Key. The utility allows you to delete
or restore that key. If you find the support utility confusing, then rename
the registry key directly. Locate the data key as shown at
http://www.gmayor.com/my_toolbars_are_missing.htm and rename it olddata.
Clear the mess from the crashes
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm before attempting to
restart Word.

If that doesn't fix it see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm especially in
relation to add-ins and the normal template. If Word crashes during the
troubleshooting, return to
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm before doing anything
else.

The utility allows you to delete or restore that key.

I had already done that
If that doesn't fix it see

relation to add-ins and the normal template.

I got it to work by deleting every normal template I could find, and
restarting Word.

There's a geek tax to pay in re-creating my own "normal" template, but at
least the labels now print as repeating text on a full sheet.

thanks so much for your time and talent in tracking down this problem.
