Word 2002 slow to user - hourglass keeps coming on about every 15

I am experiencing a problem in MS Office 2002 with Word, Excel, and Outlook
where the performance has been poor. It has gotten slow. I have an XP
operating system. It seems like a process is running in the background as I
type in Word - the hourglass appears about every 15-20 characters. I have
tried reinstalling and a number of fixes from the website like replacing
normal.dot, etc., and have not been able to correct this issue. Please help
me if you know what could be causing this.

It could be a whole load of things causing your problem. Look for 3rd Party
add-ins for starters (see
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx ) , check
for a corrupt printer driver or graphics driver. Check that any network
connection is good.

Make sure that there isn't a problem with spelling and grammar while you
type. Firstly go to Tools, Options, Spelling & Grammar tab and deselect the
While You Type options. Then open a new blank document, use Ctrl+A to
SelectAll and then use Tools, Languages, Select Languages and check the Do
Not Check Spelling & Grammar check box. Test now.

I am having the same problem. I have tried all the fixes TF suggested and
none worked...did you have luck with the fixes?

I am having the same problem, but only in Word & then in one desktop. All the
other desktops don't exhibit the problem.

I've removed the normal.dot & custom.dic, replacing them with files from an
unaffected user.

Any answers

That is far more likely to be Speech Recognition. Uninstall it.

Thanks, but removing Speech Recognition didn't work. I rebooted PC & ran a
registry cleanup to ensure no traces were left, but the hourglass still
appears about every 5-7 seconds.

Have you fired up the Task Manager to confirm that it is Word that is
sapping the processor?
