Word 2002 SP-2 crashes

Word 2002 crashes every time I try to click on "Insert
Symbol" - I recieve an error stating that "Word has
encountered a problem and needs to shut down" does anyone
know why this might be happening. I have uninstalled and
re-installed both Office XP and my printer drivers. I
can insert a symbol in Excel no problem. Should /i just
go and update to SP 3 or is there some other fix that I
can try before going to SP 3?
