Word 2002 SP 3 hangs on save, have to kill, crash report sent

I have Word 2002 SP 3. Several times a week, it hangs after I click
the Save button and then I have to kill Word, thus causing me to lose
information since my last auto-save. I have tried using Remove
Programs to remove Word, and then re-installed it, but the problem has
not gone away.

Last night I tried removing Word 2002 and going back to Word 2000.
Then, it flat-out crashed on one of the saves (I didn't have to kill
it).

I have McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0, but Word 2002 hangs even when
I disable McAfee.

I have run Spybot and Ad-Aware and they don't find any spyware.

None of my other apps, from Excel to Half-Life 2 to SPSS, have any
problems with saving or crashing. The Word documents can be pretty
short or quite long (500+ pages), although it seems to be worse with
longer docs (but even 30 page documents will hang several times per
week). I have 1 GB of memory.

Although I use auto-save set for 5 minutes, I cannot afford to work in
paranoia that I will lose anything. It's incredibly frustrating.
Thank you for any help.

For example, do you think it would help to more fully wipe clean the
current installation of Word (or even Windows, even though I don't want
to have to go through re-installing everything)? I especially
appreciate any specific advice (e.g., descriptions or links to
tools/steps to remove specific registry entries).
