Word 2002, SP3 "Winword.exe unable to locate MSVCR70.dll"

I starting getting the following error in Word 2002. "Winword.exe unable to
locate MSVCR70.dll" I did a clean uninstall & reinstall x2, did not fix. I
tried the detect & repair in Word, did not find or fix. I looked on MS site,
can only locate info on where the file should be, not the file to download.
Since softeware is OEM w/Dell, Dell say that its not their problem, contact
MS - MS says, contact Dell its OEM - not their problem. LOL Anyone had this
problem or any suggestions?

Software is Word 2002, SP3 part of Office XP - all files are up 2 date. I
think this started after one of my auto updates, but not sure since I do not
really pay attention to what is being updated.

MSVCR70.dll is not a file Word needs in order to run. It's part of the
Microsoft C Runtime Library which is used by developers. It can be
found in various folders and there are numerous versions of the file.

I suspect you found a KB article for Visual Studio .NET and if you
don't have it installed then it doesn't apply. IOW, it's doubtful
downloading a version of it and placing it in your System32 folder
will do you any good.

Based on the above, I suspect you have a third-party add-in attempting
to run and it is looking for the DLL. I'd locate the add-in first
before doing anything else. Did you recently install new software or a
printer/scanner? If so then that's the first place to look.

If not then more than likely it is a COM add-in so here's a KB article
that will supply you with troubleshooting steps you can use to find
the problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;555220

Note: even though you are not encountering a runtime error the steps
in the article are still applicable.

Ty Beth, Pointed me in the right direction. It was MS Works (I think). I
reloaded Works & error msg. stopped.

That's good to hear! :)

It could be the "Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for Word". It's a COM
add-in that loads when Word starts and integrates some Works features
into Word such as:

- Works Task Launcher
- Works Mail Merge functionality, (i.e. if you are using Works Address
book)
- Word to Works converter.

If you aren't using this functionality then you may want to go to your
Control Panel, open Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it since the
add-in is known to cause its share of headaches.
