WORD 2002 stops functioning during use

I have Word 2002 installed on my laptop. The program will
freeze, or hang up while using the "F7" function (spelling
and grammar). When this happens, I have to completely shut
off the computer using only the power button because
nothing works...not even the "Esc" key or the "Ctrl Alt
Delete" sequence works to shut it off (I don't receive an
error message when it freezes either). I've tried
repairing the installation, reinstalling the software and
renaming the "Normal" template to "Normal.dot", but
nothing has worked so far. if anyone has encountered this
problem, and may know a fix please let me know.

Sincerely,
R.B.Bailey

Hi R.B.,

I could be that you are encountering a conflict with Norton AV. Does
the Word task in the Taskbar or title bar flash?

If you are using Norton then try disabling the "Office Plug-in" option
since it is known to cause dialog boxes to appear behind the
application window.
In Norton go to "Options" and then select "Miscellaneous" and disable
the Office Plug-in option.

Hello Beth,
I disabled the Office plug-in on the anti-
virus, it didn't help. The word "Task" doesn't flash
anywhere as far as I can tell. If you have any other
suggestions, please drop me a line.
Sincerely,

Hi R.B.,

Just for clarification, I meant the Microsoft Word task (the button
for Word in the Windows Taskbar), rather than the word "task". :)

Have you tried using Detect and Repair under the Help menu? Also, what
patches do you have installed?

Hello Beth,
I have tried "Detect and Repair" several
times. Also I have uninstalled and reinstalled Word 2002
several times. I've downloaded and installed every
applicable Service pack, Patch, Update and Security
upgrade I could get my hands on. I've also did a disk scan
on my computer. The software works well for a
while...then "Boom" Out of nowhere, freezes. The problem
happens when the page scrolls from one mistake to the next
in the document. If I do a spelling and grammar check
without the grammar check (by unchecking the grammer box),
it works fine. I'm going to experiment with doing a
spelling and grammer check by by right-clicking the wavy
underlines and see what happens. I'll keep you posted. If
you have any other suggestions, drop me a line.

Sincerely,
Robert

This may be a graphics driver problem - which explains why the computer
freezes and cannot be recovered without a hard reset). Check with the Laptop
vendor to see if there is a newer driver available for download. It may also
be a good idea to do the same for the printer driver too - though that is
far less likely the cause.
