Word 2002 TOC format does not update correctly

I have a big document and I inserted a table of contents. I selected
specific formatting for each TOC level, but my formatting is not
applied. Instead the formatting of the TOC (fonts type, font size,
Bold, Italic, ...) is all wrong.
Can you please tell me how can I modify those styles?

How did you format the *headings*? Note that any direct formatting applied
to them (that is, formatting that does not come from a heading style) will
reflect in the table of contents entries.
